Mounthshannon is a picturesque village  on the shores of Lough Derg in County Clare Ireland.
The area is steeped in history going back to pre Christian times with features including Bronze age dolmen and Holy island (Inis Cealtra) an Christian  monastery of international importance.
Trees and in particular Oaks have being part of this history, evidence of which remain to this day in townland names such as Derrycon (the oak wood of the hound) and physical evidence via the largest recorded oak tree in Ireland in the village (picture left).
The impetus for the Village Arboretum follows on from the  ‘Ecosystem Services provided by the Mountshannon Village Trees’ project. This project highlighted the ecosystem services the trees provide such as carbon sequestration and  pollution removal . This website highlight the beauty these tree we so often take for granted provides to those of us lucky enough to live here and encourage visitors to this web page to come and experience these tree for themselves.
