Native Irish Aspen Trees (Populus tremula)Aspen trees (Populus tremula) are a beautiful and native species found across Ireland, easily recognized by their shimmering, trembling leaves that move with the slightest breeze. These deciduous trees thrive in moist, well-drained soils and are commonly seen along riverbanks, lake shores, and within mixed woodlands. Aspens play an important role in Ireland’s ecosystems. They support a wide variety of wildlife, including insects, birds, and fungi. One of their most fascinating traits is their ability to spread through root suckers, forming large clonal groves that enhance their resilience and create unique, living networks in the landscape. However, aspen trees are notoriously difficult to propagate—especially from seed. In Ireland’s cool, damp climate, seed production is rare and unreliable, with short-lived seeds that require very specific conditions to germinate. While vegetative propagation through root suckers is more common in nature, it can be hard to control in cultivation. Aspens typically produce suckers only when stressed or damaged, and nursery propagation through cuttings is both labor-intensive and often inconsistent. Because of these challenges, native Irish aspen has long been rare and difficult to source. But that’s changing. We’re excited to announce that we now have large quantities of native Irish aspen available for sale in 1L pots — making it easier than ever to bring this remarkable tree back into gardens, landscapes, and restoration projects across the country.
